Puna Teal Teals

The Puna Teal is a dabbling duck and used to be considered a sub-species of the Silver Teal. Puna means a type of dry tussock grass moorland of the high Andes above 4000 metres where this bird is found. This duck has a similar plumage to the Hottentot Teal and the Silver Teal.

Size

Typical Adult is 48-51cm (19-20in).

Food

Aquatic plants, seeds, and insects.

Habitat/Range

High altitude freshwater lakes, marshes, and pools in south America:- Andes of Peru, west Bolivia, north Chile, and extreme north west Argentina.

Breeding

November to January in northern Chile and July to August in Peru.

Eggs

5 to 7 (creamy-white or pinkish colour).
