Versicolor/Silver Teal Teals

The Silver Teal or Versicolor Teal is a South American dabbling duck. There are two sub-species called the Northern Silver Teal (versicolor versicolor) and the Southern Silver Teal (versicolor fretensis). This duck has a similar plumage to the Hottentot Teal and the Puna Teal.

The Silver Teal has a black cap which extends to just below the dark-brown eyes, black nape, a whitish lower face and throat, a pale blue beak with yellow at the base and a black line running down the middle, the neck, breast and front flanks are buff with dark brown spots, a barred rear flank, a brown back, the tail and abdomen are vermiculated grey and white, grey wings with white-bordered green speculum, and dark grey legs and feet. Both sexes are similar.

Size

Typical Adult is 38-43cm (15-17in).

Food

Aquatic plants, seeds, insects, larvae, molluscs, and crustaceans.

Habitat/Range

Freshwater lakes, swamps, and pools in South America. The Northern Silver Teal is found in Paraguay, southern Bolivia, and southern Brazil and the Southern Silver Teal is found in southern Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. The southernmost birds migrate to southern Brazil in the winter. Breeding Season: - Starts October to November in the south, and September to March further north.

Eggs

6 to 10 (creamy pink colour).
